Archaeologists Uncovered Artifacts Connected Harriet Tubman

Archeologists have uncovered the foundation of a home where enslaved people lived on the farm where abolitionist Harriet Tubman was born.

Maryland Governor Wes Moore joined state, local, and federal leaders at the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad Visitor Center to announce a discovery. Maryland Department of Transportation chief archeologist Dr. Julie Schablitsky says the excavation also revealed hundreds of artifacts including a West African Spirit cache.

The government says Tubman’s birthplace is sacred ground and this discovery is part of the ongoing commitment to preserving the legacy of those who lived there. The findings will be put on display at the visitors’ center.
