The White House is awarding the Presidential Medal of Freedom to 17 recipients that the president says embody the soul of the nation. They dedicated their lives to advocating for the vulnerable and driving change. One of those recipients is civil rights attorney Fred Gray.
Gray was one of the first Black members of the Alabama legislature since Reconstruction. He represented Rosa Parks, the NAACP, and Martin Luther King, Jr. Gray also helped in the desegregation of buses, public schools, and universities.
The Presidential Medal of Freedom is the nation’s highest civilian award. At 91 years old, Gray still practices law in Tuskegee, Alabama.
