First Jan. 6 Hearing: Gripping Witness Testimony, Unseen Video of Attack

Representative Bennie Thompson opened up the first public hearing on what led to the January 6th attack, stating, “The President of the United States trying to stop the transfer of power. A precedent that had stood for 220 years.”

Republican Representative Liz Cheney laid the groundwork for the argument that former President Donald Trump was at the heart of a conspiracy to overturn the presidential election results and retain power.

“President Trump’s summoned the mob, assembled the mob, and lit the flame of this attack,” Cheney said.

The committee showed a 12-minute video showing how violent protestors stormed the Capitol.

We also heard from Caroline Edwards, a Capitol Police officer injured during the attack. Edwards described in detail how she suffered a traumatic brain injury when attempting to stop rioters from breaking police barricades and moving towards the Capitol building.

“My foot caught the stare behind me and… my chin hit the hand rail, and then… I had blacked out… the back of my head [had] clipped the concrete stairs behind me,” Edwards said.

When she regained consciousness, Edwards heroically continued her duty and fought alongside other law enforcement officers to hold off insurrectionists for as long as possible.

There are several hearings to come, with the next set for Monday, June 13. In each hearing, the committee says they will lay out evidence showing former President Trump’s plan to steal the 2020 election and provide moment-by-moment accounts of what led up to that awful day.
