Florida Dept. of Education approves social studies textbooks after removing racial references

The Florida Department of Education has approved a list of social studies textbooks after removing racial references, including sections that mentioned Black Lives Matter and George Floyd, the Miami Herald reports.

This week, the state department announced that 66 of the 101 books that were considered met the “state standards-aligned social studies curriculum for every grade level.” Initially, only around 19% were approved “due to inaccurate material, errors and other information that was not aligned with Florida Law.”

In order to meet the criteria, publishers had to make adjustments before gaining approval. Public school education activists, along with some school board members, have been highly critical of the process and accused the state of trying to whitewash history.
