Florida NAACP Seeks Travel Advisory Over Controversial Legislation

The Florida State Conference of the NAACP is requesting that its national board issue a travel advisory for anyone planning to visit the state due to recent legislation from Tallahassee targeting diversity and racial issues.

“It’s hard to speak up and say something because they are rolling us back,” said Yvette Lewis, Hillsborough County NAACP president.

Members argue that Florida enforces draconian legislation related to race and gender. The request comes amid ongoing discussions on several bills addressing race and gender identity, including the expansion of the contentious Parental Bill of Rights. Critics contend that the bill could marginalize the LGBTQ community by prohibiting the teaching of sexual orientation and gender identity in schools.

The advisory also follows Florida’s recent rejection of an advanced placement African American Studies course. Gov. Ron DeSantis stated that the course lacked educational value and constituted indoctrination, not education.

The NAACP Florida State Conference is awaiting approval from the national office before releasing the advisory.
