Churches Rethinking Vigilance in a New World

Churches are now rethinking what it means to be vigilant during time where mass shootings are becoming more commonplace. Traditionally, churches were considered as safe spaces for communities but now many have been forced to rethink their strategies for becoming more vigilant in safeguarding and protecting their members. In two separate and unrelated incidents last week, intruders were said to have entered church sanctuaries but thankfully there were no incidents reported. In Warner Robins, GA, an 18-year-old White male raised concerns after he entered a predominately Black church and behaved suspiciously. Meanwhile in Jasper, TX an unknown man entered an Evadale church during a service and sat in a back row brandishing a firearm at his waist. The man left before deputies arrived. Both incidents were terrible reminders of the tragedy that took place in 2015 in Charleston, SC where 9 parishioners were killed by a white supremacist.

Activists Disrupt Service at Joel Osteen’s Church

In an unexpected outburst of defiance and protest, two female abortion activists disrupted stunned churchgoers at Joel Osteen’s Lakewood Church in Houston, TX. Just as Pastor Osteen stood in front of the megachurch reciting his customary opening “This is my bible; I am what it says I am I can do what it says I can do…” The women jumped up and stripped down to bras and undies with painted green hands and yelled this is my body, my choice and shouted expletives. The women who were escorted out of the building, were identified as a part of the group called RiseUp4AbortionRights who recently stormed priestly ordinations in San Francisco at the Cathedral of Saint Mary of the Assumption
