Griner urges push to, ‘fight to bring home every American detained overseas’ at NAACP Image Awards

Brittney Griner was met with a standing ovation as she made a surprise appearance at the NAACP Image Awards over the weekend. It was her first live television appearance since being released from a Russian penal colony.

Standing beside her was her wife, Cherelle Griner. She thanked the audience and said, “It feels so good to be here, especially with my beautiful, amazing wife. And with all of y’all here today. I wanna thank, I wanna thank everyone, and let’s keep fighting to bring home every American still detained overseas.”

Just two months ago, the Biden administration secured her release in a prisoner swap with Russian arms dealer Viktor Bout. Griner had been detained in Russia for 10 months and was scheduled to serve nine years after being found guilty of possessing marijuana oil at a Moscow airport.

The WNBA All Star will return to the court this year. She has renewed her contract with the Phoenix Mercury.
