Today is National Voter Registration Day, a day to bring awareness to the tens of thousands who are not registered to vote. According to U.S. Census data from 2020, as many as one in four Americans are not registered, 5 million people need to update their voter registration between presidential elections, and 40% of people are not aware they need to update their voter registration after moving.
During the White House press briefing, press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre stressed why this day is important and what the administration is doing to encourage voter registration.
“Last year on the anniversary of Bloody Sunday, President Biden signed an executive order directing an all of government effort to promote access to voting. President Biden and Vice President Harris also continue to urge the Senate to pass the Freedom to Vote Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act and to change Senate rules to prevent a minority of senators from blocking action to protect this fundamental right.”
