Johnson & Johnson announces that they will no longer sell talcum powder-based products around the world. The company recently announced that they will be transitioning to all cornstarch-based baby powder with talc-based baby powder being fully discontinued globally next year in 2023.
Cornstarch-based products are already sold in numerous countries, including in the U.S. The company says its position on the safety of its cosmetic talc remains unchanged. They also said they stand behind the decades of independent, scientific analysis by medical experts around the world that confirms that their talc-based baby powder is safe, doesn’t contain asbestos, and does not cause cancer.
In 2018, a jury in St. Louis delivered a $4.7 billion verdict against Johnson & Johnson in favor of women and their families who claimed asbestos in the company’s talcum powder products caused them to develop ovarian cancer.
