Memphis City Council Moves Forward on Police Reform Proposals After Beating Death of Tyre Nichols

The Memphis City Council is moving forward with several new proposals following the beating death of Tyre Nichols at the hands of police. Among the proposals is ending routine traffic stops or requiring them only in marked law enforcement vehicles. Another plan would require an annual review of the police training academy.

The two resolutions and six ordinances will require additional votes by the council to take effect. This comes as more officers are set to face charges in this case. The city said seven more officers will be issued a statement of charges for policy violations. That means a total of 13 are facing discipline, including the six who’ve already been fired. The new officers getting charged aren’t yet being identified because the investigation is still ongoing.

In addition, Memphis Officer Demetrius Haley, who was one of the officers charged and fired in the beating death of Tyre, is under additional fire after texting photos of Tyre after he was beaten. He admitted to sending the photograph of Nichols to at least five people.
