Most Republicans Do Not Believe Trump Had Classified Documents

A new poll finds a majority of Republicans do not believe former President Trump had classified documents stored at his Mar-a-Lago resort. The poll released by Marquette Law School on Thursday found that 39% of respondents who identified as Republican believe Trump had classified documents, while 61% do not. On the other hand, it found that 93% of Democrats believe Trump was in possession of classified documents, as did 65% of independent voters.

FILE – This image contained in a court filing by the Department of Justice on Aug. 30, 2022, and partially redacted by the source, shows a photo of documents seized during the Aug. 8 FBI search of former President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate. In the weeks since the FBI searched the estate and seized about 100 documents with classification markings, Trump has insisted he did nothing wrong and argued he declassified the information. On Sept. 21, he said in a Fox News interview that a president can declassify material “even by thinking about it.” (Department of Justice via AP)

Meanwhile, a federal judge in Phoenix says the U.S. House committee investigating the January 6th attack on the capital can seek the phone records of Arizona Republican Party chair Kelli Ward. In a ruling, a U.S. district judge backed the committee’s subpoena for Ward’s phone records covering activity from November 2020 through January 2021.

That time period includes Ward’s convening of a slate of uncertified and unauthorized electors from former President Donald Trump who lost in Arizona.
