Known as “the High Priestess of Soul,” Nina Simone was born in 1933 as Eunice Kathleen Waymon in North Carolina, and went on to study at the Juilliard School in New York City.
Simone gained widespread recognition with her 1959 debut album, “Little Girl Blue,” featuring songs such as “My Baby Just Cares for Me,” “Mood Indigo,” and “I Loves You, Porgy,” which reached No. 18 on the Billboard Hot 100.
In the 1960s, Simone became actively involved in the civil rights movement, influencing her musical compositions. During her later years, she resided in Europe, ultimately settling in France in 1992.
Nina Simone passed away in France at the age of 70.
