Sarah Vaughan was born on March 27, 1924, in Newark, New Jersey.
Vaughan began singing in church as a child and later performed in local clubs. In 1942, she won the Apollo Theater’s Amateur Night competition and began her professional career.
Vaughan recorded her first hit, “If You Could See Me Now,” in 1946 and went on to have a successful recording and performing career that spanned several decades. Some of her most popular songs include “Misty,” “Lullaby of Birdland,” and “Send in the Clowns.”
Throughout her career, Vaughan won four Grammy Awards and was inducted into the International Jazz Hall of Fame and the American Jazz Hall of Fame. She is considered one of the greatest jazz singers of all time.
In 1990, Sarah Vaughn died at the age of 66 due to complications from lung cancer.
