President Biden Reflects on George Floyd’s Legacy, Urges Congress To Act on Police Reform

On the third anniversary of George Floyd’s death, President Joe Biden issued a statement to mark the occasion and reflect on the lasting global impact of Floyd’s murder. He characterized Floyd’s death as a catalyst for a worldwide civil rights movement, emphasizing the necessity for sweeping police reform. Biden highlighted the strides made through his executive order, which incorporated key aspects of the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act into federal law enforcement practices.

However, Biden stressed that lasting change would require action from Congress, urging lawmakers to pass meaningful police reform legislation and pledge to sign it. The president called on the nation to honor Floyd’s memory by actively participating in the pursuit of justice and equality.

Many community organizers are stressing that not enough progress has been made, noting a shift in public sentiment with rising crime impacting discussions on policing and public safety.
