Rev. Al Sharpton to Eulogize Ajike Owens and Call for Justice in Florida Shooting

Reverend Al Sharpton will travel to Florida on Monday, June 12, at the request of the mother of Ajike “AJ” Owens. Sharpton will deliver the eulogy for the 35-year-old Black woman and single mother of four who was fatally shot by a 58-year-old white woman last week. Attorney Ben Crump, who is representing the Owens family, will join Sharpton in issuing a national call for justice and demanding necessary reforms.

The incident occurred Friday, June 2, when Owens’ children were playing in a nearby field at an apartment complex. Susan Louise Lorincz reportedly began yelling at them, ordering them to leave her land, and using racial slurs. The children obeyed and unintentionally left behind an iPad, which Lorincz confiscated.

Upon learning about the incident, Owens walked across the street with her child to confront Lorincz. She knocked on the door and in a shocking turn of events, Lorincz allegedly fired through the metal door, killing Owens. Lorincz has since been arrested by the Marion County Sheriff’s Office.
