SCOTUS Conservative Majority Appears Ready To Ban College Affirmative Action

The U.S. Supreme Court’s conservative majority appears ready to ban college affirmative action. However, most Americans say institutions should be allowed to consider students’ race or ethnicity as a minor factor in admissions decisions, according to a new poll from The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research, released on May 30.

About 63% of the 1,680 adults surveyed said the high court should not block colleges from considering race or ethnicity for admissions decisions, the poll found. At the same time, 68% said considering race or ethnicity should be a low priority.

Last fall, the Supreme Court heard oral arguments in cases that challenged affirmative action admissions policies. The court is expected to rule soon.
