During a Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing, Sen. Tim Kaine (D-VA) spoke up about the country’s history of racism and discrimination. He went as far as to say that intentional discrimination was perpetrated by the State Department and by Congress throughout history.
He made those comments during a Senate hearing on diversity, equity, and inclusion in diplomacy and development:
“I hate it when people act as if there was no history before we walked into a room and pretend that the reality of discrimination against groups of people did not actually happen. Many groups of people, Irish, faced discrimination. But others have faced much more serious discrimination that still needs to be repaired and remedied. And the discrimination was not accidental, it was intentional. And the discrimination was perpetrated by the State Department and by Congress.”
