Shocking Stats: Social Media Teen Epidemic

In an important advisory issued by U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy on Tuesday, he announced alarming statistics revealing that social media use among young people has reached unprecedented levels, with as high as 95% of teenagers and 40% of children age 8-12 being active users.

However, the safety of this digital landscape for children and teens remains a critical concern, particularly during their vulnerable stage of brain development. Dr. Murthy emphasizes the need for further research to determine the impact of social media on young minds.

He calls for a collective effort involving policymakers, technology companies, researchers, families, and the youth themselves to promote responsible use, protect privacy, address mental health risks, and ensure the well-being of the next generation in the digital age.
