Texas Elementary School Massacre: 19 Kids, 2 Teachers Dead, Sen. Murphy Pleads For Gun Reform

“What are we doing? Why are you here?” asks Senator Chris Murphy emphatically on Tuesday, pleading with Republican colleagues to find a pathway forward on passing gun reform legislation.

The latest plea comes after a lone gunman went on a killing spree inside a Uvalde, Texas elementary school. Police say 19 children and two teachers are dead after 18-year-old Salvador Ramos crashed his car and entered Robb Elementary School carrying an assault rifle and wearing military-style armor.

Ramos reportedly shot his way into the school, bypassing the security guards, barricaded himself inside a classroom, and opened fire on second, third, and fourth-grade students. Authorities say that before heading to the school, he also shot his grandmother, who is now in critical condition. Ramos was killed by officers arriving on the scene.

Tuesday night at the White House, President Biden addressed the nation.

“As a nation, we have to ask when in God’s name are we going to stand up to the gun lobby? When in God’s name, [do] we do what we all know in our gut needs to be done?”
