It’s a huge primary day as all eyes are on several key states and races. Several races will also test the influence of former President Donald Trump’s backing.
In Arkansas, Trump’s former press secretary Sarah Huckabee is expected to win the Republican primary for governor. But in Georgia gubernatorial primary, things are much more contentious. On the Republican side, Governor Brian Kemp faces off against Senator David Perdue. Trump has been adamantly opposed to Kemp since he rebuffed Trump’s efforts to “find” enough votes to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election in Kemp’s home state. Whoever wins that race faces off with presumed Democratic candidate Stacey Abrams.
In Georgia’s Senate race, former Dallas Cowboys player Herschel Walker is expected to be the front runner on the Republican side, and current U.S. Senator Raphael Warnock on the Democratic side. Both have many challengers but lead their races. Georgia is one of the states that has been a battleground over voting rights legislation.
In Alabama’s Senate race lies another test of Trump’s influence. Representative Mo Brooks, who is on the ballot for the state’s Republican primary, won the former president’s endorsement, only to have it rescinded two months ago. The pulled endorsement appears to have had the unintended effect of helping rather than hurting Brooks in recent polls.
