WNBA player Brittney Griner pleads guilty to drugs charges in Russian court

According to Reuters, Brittney Griner pleaded guilty on July 7 to drug charges but said she had not deliberately broken the law.

Griner was detained on Feb. 17 by Russian Federal Customs Service at an Airport near Moscow. Agents said they discovered hashish oil vape cartridges in her luggage, The New York Times reported.

She’s a championship-winning player with the WNBA’s Phoenix Mercury who plays for a Russian team in the off season. Her family has been asking the Biden administration to help with her release. According to CBS News, Griner wrote in an open letter to Biden, “I’m terrified I might be here forever.”

Griner is facing 10 years in prison sentence as punishment.
