Biden Highlights Gun Reform, Calls On Congress To Do More

At a ceremony yesterday at the White House, President Biden commemorated the historic achievement of the passage of the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act. The bill is the most significant gun violence reduction legislation in the last 30 years.

The law funds crisis intervention, includes “red flag” laws, keeps guns out of the hands of people who are a danger to themselves and others, closes the “boyfriend loophole,” and requires people under the age of 21 to undergo enhanced background checks.

In addition, it includes the first-ever federal law that makes gun trafficking and straw purchases distinct federal crimes. It also clarifies who needs to register as federally licensed gun dealers and execute background checks before selling a single weapon.

Biden is calling on Congress to build on the bipartisan legislation and pass legislation that would ban assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, strengthen background checks, and enact safe storage laws. The president also called on lawmakers to confirm his pick for ATF director, Steve Dettelbach.
